Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin, built up in thin layers and sculpted by hand, to repair chips, close small gaps, even out edges and improve the shape of worn or short teeth.

It gives immediate results with no downtime. In most cases we can make the change in a single visit, with no drilling and no injections, which makes bonding one of the most conservative and cost-effective ways to change your smile.

Should I whiten my teeth first?

We always recommend whitening before bonding. Composite doesn't change colour with whitening, so we match the bonding to your new, brighter shade once whitening is complete.

Keeping bonding looking its best

Composite is softer than natural enamel, so it needs looking after and is more prone to staining. We offer a composite conditioning treatment to keep it at its best and recommend it every three to six months. Typically, composite bonding lasts around five years cosmetically before it needs refreshing.

  • Brush twice a day and clean between your teeth as normal
  • Coffee, tea, red wine and smoking can stain composite over time
  • Avoid biting hard objects such as pen lids or ice

Is bonding right for me?

Bonding works best for healthy teeth that need modest changes. If your teeth are crowded or badly misaligned, we may suggest straightening them first with Invisalign so less bonding is needed. Any decay or gum problems are treated before cosmetic work starts.

What to expect

Step by step, at your pace.

    Consultation

We look at your smile together, check your teeth are healthy and agree what you'd like to change.

  2. 02

    Preparation

Your enamel is gently cleaned with a mild gel so the bonding agent can grip. No drilling in most cases.

  3. 03

    Sculpting

Resin is added in small amounts and several shades to build up colour and contour, then set with a curing light.

  4. 04

    Polish

Each tooth is polished and its shape refined, then we check your bite.

Questions

Things patients often ask

How long does composite bonding last?

Typically around five years cosmetically. Composite is softer than enamel and can pick up stains, so regular check-ups and our composite conditioning treatment every three to six months help it look its best for longer.

Will I need an injection?

In most cases, no. Bonding usually needs no drilling, so there's no need for an injection.

Should I whiten my teeth before or after bonding?

Before. Composite won't whiten, so we whiten your teeth first and then match the bonding to your new shade.

Can bonding be whitened later?

No. Whitening gel doesn't change the colour of composite, which is why we recommend whitening first.
